Located in Costa Mesa, the Orange County office of Sheppard Mullin was established in 1977 to meet the needs of one of Southern California's fastest-growing business centers. Sheppard Mullin's Orange County office is located in the focal point of the county, with the Orange County Performing Arts Center next door, the South Coast Repertory Theater across the street, the new Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall across the way, and the South Coast Plaza regional shopping mall and numerous office buildings all within walking distance. As this region south and east of Los Angeles has grown into a high-tech business hub, so has the list of clients and industries served by Sheppard Mullin's Orange County office.
The office presently has approximately 60 lawyers and provides truly "full service" legal advice to our clients. Attorneys in the Orange County office specialize in bankruptcy, corporate, labor and employment, finance, intellectual property, litigation, real estate, and trust and estate matters. The Practice Group leaders of our Business Trial, Labor and Employment, Finance and Bankruptcy, and Intellectual Property (co-chair) practice groups are in this office as well as the leader of our Life Sciences Team.
Lawyers from Sheppard Mullin's Orange County office have been involved in some of the largest and most high profile transactions and lawsuits around, including the City of Anaheim's lawsuit against Angels Baseball to determine the proper name for our local baseball team (we represented the city), the County of Orange's Chapter 9 bankruptcy case (we represented the school districts in Orange County in the bankruptcy proceeding and also served as litigation counsel to the County in connection with the litigation filed against the County's professional advisors), the construction of the Highway 73 toll road across South Orange County (our client financed the project), and the largest unfair competition trial ever conducted in California (we represented the State Compensation Insurance Fund Insurance throughout a year-long trial that resulted in a defense verdict for our client on all counts).
One of the factors that truly distinguishes Sheppard Mullin's Orange County office from other law offices is the way that our careful summer associate selection process has paid dividends for the office. At present, 12 of the 22 partners in the Orange County office started their legal careers as summer associates with Sheppard Mullin, as did 7 of the last 10 associates elevated to partner in Orange County. We put a lot of time and energy into selecting our summer associate class to the advantage of both the firm and the summer associates.
