Greggory B. Mendenhall is special counsel in the Finance and Bankruptcy Practice Group and works in the firm's Washington, D.C. and New York offices.
Areas of Practice
Mr. Mendenhall's practice is concentrated in finance and corporate matters, as well as administrative and legislative matters, particularly in the transportation industry. He has extensive experience in maritime finance and business transactions and advocacy on behalf of clients before federal agencies and the U.S. Congress. Mr. Mendenhall’s clients have included domestic and foreign asset-based finance companies, vessel owners and operators, shipyards and large corporations that own or operate maritime assets as a part of their business.
Mr. Mendenhall spent 10 years on the business side of the maritime industry with significant responsibility for both legal and business matters. He was vice president and director at United States Lines, Inc., where he was responsible for worldwide vessel operations. He oversaw and directed the construction of 17 new vessels; negotiated shipyard contracts, vessel sales and purchase agreements, worldwide contracts for vessel repairs and modifications and managed the U.S. Navy (Military Sealift Command) vessel chartering and operations. His practical business experience adds a substantial dimension to the advice and representation of maritime clients.
Mr. Mendenhall has represented clients and provided advice on loan and sale leaseback transactions, on domestic and foreign ship construction contracts, on financing guarantees under the Title XI program, on the securitization of airline receivables and on domestic, foreign and joint-venture vessel ownership and vessel operating agreements and structures. He has obtained numerous regulatory approvals for his clients, filed comments in rulemaking proceedings and obtained statutory changes to the domestic vessel financing statutes and documentation and manning requirements of the U.S. Coast Guard. He also represents clients in obtaining annual appropriations for the maritime cargo preference programs under the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Agency for International Development. Mr. Mendenhall has prepared and filed an application for a new Top Level Domain before the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). He is the author of several articles and has made many presentations and speeches on matters concerning his practice.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Mendenhall was a founding partner of Abourezk, Shack & Mendenhall, P.C., Washington, D.C. He spent ten years in Washington and has handled significant matters before the Federal Communications Commission, Customs Service and the United States Congress.
