Mr. Hsu is a special counsel in the Intellectual Property Practice Group in the firm's San Diego/Del Mar office.
Areas of Practice
Mr. Hsu has extensive experience in advising high-technology companies on all aspects of intellectual property protection and enforcement. Mr. Hsu's practice involves intellectual property litigation, patent prosecution, technology licensing, portfolio acquisition, and due diligence related to licensing and acquisition matters. Mr. Hsu has prepared and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications in the fields of wired and wireless communication systems, semiconductor devices, optical devices, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), integrated circuits, signal processing, and algorithms. In patent litigation, Mr. Hsu is experienced in briefings on various issues related to patent infringement and validity. In a declaratory judgment action, Mr. Hsu successfully argued and obtained a summary judgment of non-infringement which was affirmed by the Federal Circuit. Mr. Hsu has also defended a major cell phone maker against licensing assertions by multinational corporations as well as non-practicing entities. Mr. Hsu also has extensive experience in conducting due diligence in acquisitions and licensing of patent portfolios in wireless communications, including portfolios related to wireless air interface standards.
Previously, Mr. Hsu served as Director of Intellectual Property for a Fortune 500 company that is a world renowned leader in semiconductor chip products for wired and wireless communications. Mr. Hsu's in-house experience also includes management of patent litigation and licensing matters at a major cellular product maker. Prior to entering the legal profession, Mr. Hsu was an engineer involved in the design of microwave multiplexers at Hughes Space and Communications Company.Education

- Wi-LAN, Inc. v. Personal Communication Devices LLC (E.D.Tex.) – represented defendant, a distributor of cellular and wireless devices, in a patent infringement suit involving cellular and Wi-Fi standards. Case favorably settled.
- Kyocera Wireless Corp. v. President Electronics, Ltd. (S.D. Cal.) – represented plaintiff, a cellular device maker, in a declaratory judgment action against an owner of design patents. Successfully obtained summary judgment of non-infringement which was affirmed by the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
