Sheppard Mullin Partner Receives High Honor From Anti-Defamation League

05.30.2003

Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP is pleased to announce that the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) will present Jerry J. Gumpel with its National Torch of Liberty Award on May 31, during the San Diego chapter’s 25th Anniversary Celebration dinner event, "Honoring Our Leadership." Gumpel, partner in the Corporate Practice Group, is a past Board Chair of the ADL.

"With all of the chaos in the world right now, it is now more important than ever to stand up for equal treatment for all, to celebrate diversity and promote tolerance," commented Gumpel. "I am very grateful to be selected for this honor, and look forward to continuing my work with the ADL as we strive to eliminate ignorance, bigotry and hatred. I hope that the ADL’s meeting in San Diego will serve to attract others to its cause."

The ADL Torch of Liberty Award was established to celebrate those who, by word and deed, seek to preserve the precious heritage of liberty, freedom, equality and democracy. It recognizes those in today's world who demonstrate leadership and courage. Past recipients include former President George H.W. Bush, evangelist Billy Graham and filmmaker Michael Mann.

Morris S. Casuto, ADL Regional Director, said, "The Torch of Liberty award is given to those dedicated volunteers who uphold the mission of the ADL, and are committed to a democratic society free of bias. Jerry Gumpel was a Past Board Chair and is still a very active lay leader- who works closely with us to eradicate anti-Semitism, bigotry and prejudice. This award is our acknowledgement of his fine efforts and support throughout the years."

Founded in 1913, the Anti-Defamation League is one of the oldest and largest civil rights/human relations organizations in the nation. The ADL is dedicated to fighting anti-Semitism, racism, prejudice, and bigotry of all kinds while defending democratic ideals and safeguarding civil rights. Since 1979, the San Diego region of the ADL has recognized leaders within the community.
