Seong Kim is a partner in the Intellectual Property and Litigation Practice Groups in the firm's Los Angeles (Century City) office.

Mr. Kim is known for his exceptional winning record at trials and arbitrations, having obtained judgments and settlements totaling hundreds of million dollars. Some of the largest companies around the world turn to Mr. Kim to protect their interests.

Chambers and Partners recognized Mr. Kim for his “strong track record” and for his “creative legal solutions.”  Legal 500 US noted that Mr. Kim is “renowned for his skill and effectiveness.”  IAM Patent 1000 recognized Mr. Kim for “his sharpened trial skills, impressive match stats and ebullient client reviews,” stating:  “He is extremely efficient and resolves matters quickly, but always with an eye on quality. He provides a very high level of service.”  

Mr. Kim is an Adjunct Professor at the University of California, Irvine, School of Law, where he teaches Advanced Trial Techniques. He also has lectured at trial technique seminars for various lawyer/bar associations in the United States, Asia and Latin America.

Mr. Kim is a contributing author of the Treatise, “Trade Secret Litigation and Protection in California,” published by the Intellectual Property Section of the California State Bar.  He is also a member of the California State Bar's Continuing Education of the Bar, Real Property Advisory Committee.

Mr. Kim has been featured and quoted in various publications including the Daily Journal, the Los Angeles Business Journal, and the Los Angeles Times. He was also featured as a “Minority Power Broker” by Law360.

Prior to joining Sheppard Mullin, Mr. Kim was a partner of an Am-Law 100 law firm, where he served as a member of its Executive Committee, as the Head of Korea Commercial Litigation, Co-Head of the Korea Practice Group, and Co-Managing Partner of that firm’s Los Angeles and Century City offices.

  • Obtained significant favorable settlement for a collection of hedge funds in connection with lawsuit to recover $1 billion dollar investment in an internet incubator company
  • Represented SK Hynix against Toshiba and SanDisk in a multi-national lawsuit which plaintiffs have asserted to be the largest trade secret case in the world
  • Obtained favorable settlement and injunction for prominent hair products distributor in trademark infringement lawsuits and related Trademark Trial and Appeal Board proceedings
  • Obtained favorable settlement for a prominent tool company in connection with a $100 million trademark licensing dispute against Snap-On Tools
  • Obtained favorable results for international multi-media company in various disputes involving copyright and trademark licensing and infringement
  • Obtained favorable settlement and dismissals for one of the largest international retailers (Forever 21) in lawsuits alleging patent and copyright infringement
  • Successfully represented one of the largest insurers (GEICO) in a lawsuit alleging patent infringement
  • Successfully represented one of the largest fashion houses against trademark infringement claims
  • Obtained dismissals of claims against Korean ramen noodle companies (Korea Yakult and Paldo) in multi-district class action lawsuit alleging price fixing
  • Representing foreign insurance company against “claw-back” claims brought by the trustee of the Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities, LLC
  • Representing foreign insurance company against claims brought by Liquidators of the largest “feeder funds” to Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities, LLC
  • Obtained favorable recovery for the Korean Deposit Insurance Corporation to pursue various fraud related claims in connection with an international embezzlement scheme
  • Representing one of the largest Korean insurance company pursue claims against an international reinsurance company
  • Represented the maker of 7 for All Mankind™ jeans against claims brought by the makers of Citizens of Humanity™ jeans claiming ownership in the former company
  • Obtained favorable settlement for one of the largest automobile manufacturers in connection with a software licensing dispute
  • Representing one of the largest automobile parts makers against various patent infringement claims
  • Represented one of the largest software companies in connection with a dispute involving software maintenance contracts
