Mr. Hanle is a partner in the Intellectual Property Practice Group in the firm's Orange County office. 

Areas of Practice

Mr. Hanle's practice emphasizes patent infringement litigation and other intellectual property litigation.  Mr. Hanle has litigated patent cases in a broad variety of technologies, including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, computer hardware and software, electrical, telecommunications, optical, and mechanical.  He represents both patent owners and accused infringers.  Mr. Hanle also has experience in trade secret and unfair competition litigation, trademark litigation and complex business litigation, primarily in federal courts.  He has substantial trial experience and has briefed and argued before the Federal Circuit, 9th Circuit and California Court of Appeals.  Mr. Hanle also regularly advises clients on risks and strategies relating to litigation and dispute avoidance, particularly in intellectual property.

Representative Matters

Recently won summary judgment of non-infringement in patent case involving magnetic eyewear technology.

Represented Lenovo against the MPEG LA patent pool in a patent infringement action in the regarding MPEG video and audio compression technology. MPEG LA v. Lenovo Group Limited

Currently representing biotech company in patent and licensing litigation/arbitration involving recombinant DNA technology in the United States and Switzerland.

Represented CAD/CAM software company in two patent infringement actions involving Computer Numerical Control technology. Both cases settled favorably.

Defended medical device company in a patent infringement action involving spinal implants. Obtained an excellent settlement after a favorable claim construction ruling and summary judgment.

Prevailed at trial and on appeal on behalf of pharmaceutical company in patent litigation under the Hatch-Waxman Act. We had the asserted patent declared unenforceable. Aventis Pharma, S.A. v. Amphastar Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Represented surgical robotics company in patent infringement cross-actions. The case settled favorably after we tried one case and won summary judgment in the other. Computer Motion, Inc. v. Intuitive Surgical, Inc.

Prevailed at trial and on appeal in patent/technology license litigation concerning angioplasty balloons, catheters, stents and ultrasound transducers.

Represented sunglass company in patent infringement action involving lens shape and manufacturing technology. The case settled after several favorable rulings for our client.

Represented sunglass company in a patent infringement action involving polarized polyurethane-based lenses. The case settled favorably after favorable claim construction ruling.

Prevailed on summary judgment and in the Federal Circuit in a patent infringement case involving pattern recognition and alignment technology for semiconductor manufacturing. We invalidated the plaintiff's patent. Ultratech, Inc. v. Tamarack Scientific, Inc.

Represented sunglass company in patent infringement litigation involving Bluetooth technology in sunglass frames. The case is currently on appeal.

Represented Lantronix, Inc. in patent cross-actions involving remote computer access technology. The case settled favorably. Lantronix, Inc. v. Digi International, Inc.

Represented automotive company in patent infringement litigation involving carbon-carbon racing clutches. The case settled favorably after favorable claim construction ruling.

Represented large manufacturing company in patent infringement litigation involving automotive fluid replacement devices. Case settled favorably after favorable court rulings. Link New Tech v. Illinois Tool Works

Represented plaintiff software company in patent infringement case concerning debt collection software. Case settled on favorable terms to client.
