Our thriving land use team seeks a mid-level to senior-level associate to join us in our Downtown Los Angeles Office.  The ideal candidate should have 4-7 years of experience working on the entitlement of development projects.  We are interested in candidates who have solid experience and expertise in these areas:

  • Preparing CEQA documents for development projects and otherwise addressing CEQA issues.
  • Applying for, negotiating and securing entitlements and other regulatory approvals for development projects, including the drafting of findings and project conditions.
  • Advising clients on a variety of land use, zoning and subdivision issues.
  • While not mandatory, we welcome candidates who also have experience drafting and negotiating ordinances and real estate transactional documents relating to project development, such as development agreements, easement and parking agreements, sign ordinances, purchase agreements and ground leases, and cost-sharing agreements.

The candidate must have strong academic credentials, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and familiarity with the land use/zoning processes in the City of Los Angeles and other jurisdictions in the greater Los Angeles area.  Experience with federal and state laws related to natural resources, coastal protection, historic preservation and affordable housing is desirable. The candidate should have the desire to grow with a team and develop qualities ultimately leading to partnership at the firm.  Please note that we are looking for a land use attorney, not an environmental lawyer who deals primarily with issues relating to hazardous substances.

Sheppard Mullin is currently home to over 900 attorneys Firmwide and is ranked #56 on the 2019 American Lawyer 100 List. With one of the largest, most experienced and diverse real estate, land use and environmental practices in the country, we offer a diversity and depth of experience that is unrivaled. We are proud that our efforts have earned us recognition as a leading firm by The Legal 500 U.S., Chambers and Partners USA, and U.S. News and World Report (with Best Attorneys), among others.

Qualified candidates should email cover letter, resume, and final law school transcript to Brittany Olson (bolson@sheppardmullin.com), with the Subject Line “LA Land Use Position (4-7 years of experience).” Legal search firms should confirm that they have a current fee agreement with Sheppard Mullin before submitting the same documents on their candidate, and please also start the Subject Line with “LA Land Use Position (4-7 years of experience).”
