Sheppard Mullin attorneys interview at approximately 25 national and regional law schools each fall, and the firm also participates in various job fairs across the country. Our on-campus visits take place in August, with callbacks extended soon after each visit. Our interviews are with second-year (or third-year evening) students only. Interview & Hiring Process
Visiting Your Law School: Each Sheppard Mullin office selects the schools where it wishes to interview. If you are interested in a particular office that is not represented at your law school, or if our schedules are full, you are welcome to drop off your resume and transcript with a Sheppard Mullin interviewer during his or her on-campus visit.
Receiving A Callback: Our on-campus interviewers extend callback invitations as soon as possible after the interview day. However, if you interview with an attorney from an office that is not your preferred location, the attorney will forward your resume to the desired office, in which case it may take a little longer for you to hear back from us.
If you receive a callback from one of our offices, please contact the local Recruiting Administrator soon after to let her know whether you accept the callback, and your preferences for an interview date. If you are flying in to visit one of our offices, the firm will provide a hotel room for you for the evening before or after your interviews, depending on the timing of your interview schedule. We usually share travel expenses with other firms that you are visiting on a callback trip.
We attempt to notify students by email as soon as posisble following the on-campus interview if they are not receiving a callback. So that the firm does not over-hire, our attorneys are given authority to extend only a certain number of callbacks and often have difficult decisions to make. We may put students on a waitlist following a campus visit if our interviewers want to exceed their quota.
The Callback: Students will usually interview with 4-5 attorneys in our office and have lunch or dinner with 2 additional attorneys. The interviews and meal will typically last between 4 and 5 hours.
After The Callback: Each office's Recruiting Committee meets periodically to review evaluations of students that have visited their office. We strive to notify students of the results of their callback as soon as possible. If you receive an offer, you will normally have 28 days to consider it in accordance with NALP guidelines.

The firm opened its Chicago office in 2012. Firm chairman Guy Halgren commented: "Establishing a Chicago presence is a strategic step in growing and strengthening the firm's national footprint, beyond the East and West coasts. Initially the office will leverage the success of our corporate, employment and finance practices and helps us serve current and future clients. We are pleased to be opening the office with a strong foundation of talented attorneys having exactly the right combination of skills and experience. Chicago is the Midwest's corporate center, and we are committed to growing the office to serve companies in the region, including those in the advertising, healthcare, insurance, private equity and technology sectors."
Sheppard Mullin began in Los Angeles in 1927 and moved to the firm’s current location on Hope Street in 1975. Serving as our headquarters, the Los Angeles office is currently home to over 150 attorneys. As you would expect with an office of this size, our areas of practice include the full scope of a commercial law practice, and our clients range from Bank of America and Northrop Grumman Corporation to start-up companies.
All 5 floors of the Los Angeles office underwent a major renovation in 2010. Its walls are lined with original contemporary art collected by Gordon Hampton. This museum-quality collection brightens the day for those who work in this office. As the heart and hub of the firm, the Los Angeles office provides a high-energy, stimulating environment for the attorneys who work here.
In 2004, Sheppard Mullin brought its strong and diverse foundation to New York City, opening what is now a 80-lawyer office in Rockefeller Center. The office began with a core litigation group and has grown into a vibrant part of the firm. Today, Sheppard Mullin's New York office has partners practicing in virtually every one of the firm's traditional areas of expertise.
The lawyers in the New York office have practices that include sophisticated commercial litigation, intellectual property, antitrust, entertainment and media, corporate, tax, banking and financial restructuring, and labor and employment law. The co-chairs of our Labor & Employment, Finance & Bankruptcy and Corporate & Securities practices are resident in our NY office. The firm has devoted substantial resources to identifying and cultivating creative, problem-solving attorneys and entrepreneurial individuals who are interested in building the office as a key element in the growth of the firm. This approach applies to every lawyer from the junior-most associate to the senior-most partner.
Located in Costa Mesa, the Orange County office of Sheppard Mullin was established in 1977 to meet the needs of one of Southern California's fastest-growing business centers. Sheppard Mullin's Orange County office is located in the focal point of the county, with the Orange County Performing Arts Center next door, the South Coast Repertory Theater across the street, the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall across the way, and the South Coast Plaza regional shopping mall and numerous office buildings all within walking distance. As this region south and east of Los Angeles has grown into a high-tech business hub, so has the list of clients and industries served by Sheppard Mullin's Orange County office.
One of the factors that truly distinguishes Sheppard Mullin's Orange County office from other law offices is the way that our careful summer associate selection process has paid dividends for the office. At present, 18 of the 32 partners in the Orange County office started their legal careers at Sheppard Mullin as summer associates or entry-level associates, as did 10 of the last 14 associates elevated to partner in Orange County. We put a lot of time and energy into selecting our summer associate class, to the advantage of both the firm and the summer associates.

Our client base is diverse, ranging from global financial institutions and mature publicly traded corporations to start-ups. Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to interview with more than one Sheppard Mullin office if different offices are on campus the same day?
If we have separate schedules representing different Sheppard Mullin offices, you should sign up to interview with each office in which you have an interest. If a single schedule represents multiple offices, please be sure that the interviewer knows the office(s) in which you are most interested.
How soon should I expect to hear back from the firm after the OCI?
Decisions to extend callbacks to students are usually made within a few days after the interview. Occasionally we will put students "on hold" if we are over-subscribed at a particular school.
If I receive a callback, how do I go about arranging it?
You will be given the contact information for the recruiting coordinator in the office to which you are invited. We appreciate early notification if you intend to accept the invitation, even if you are not yet in a position to select an interview date.
What travel expenses does the firm reimburse?
The firm will pay directly for flights and hotel rooms as needed through its travel agent. Please save your receipts for expenses such as transportation to and from airports and hotels, and meals related to the interview trip, for reimbursement after you return home. Please submit your request for reimbursement within 30 days of your callback. Please click here for NALP's Travel Expense Reimbursement form.
How soon after the callback will I hear from the firm?
The firm tries to get back to students within a week of their callback interview. Delays beyond that are usually due to the timing of each office's Recruiting Committee meetings. On occasion, students may be put on “hold” pending resolution of previous offers.
