Mr. Long is Of Counsel in the Business Trial Practice Group in the firm’s Los Angeles office.
Areas of Practice
Mr. Long has conducted approximately 40 civil jury trials in state and federal courts in addition to a number of court trials, arbitrations and federal, state and local agency matters and has argued many appeals before state and federal courts including the Ninth Circuit sitting en banc and the United States Supreme Court. In addition, he has acted as an arbitrator for the Los Angeles Superior Court. The jury trials have been in a number of substantive areas including products liability, lender liability, commercial transactions, real estate, professional negligence, wrongful termination, securities, unfair competition, trade libel and false advertising, and patents.

Represented Pan American World Airways in the litigation arising from the Tenerife and Pago Pago air crashes and from the Karachi hijacking; American Airlines in the Chicago air crash; and General Dynamics in the Paris air crash - all federal multidistrict litigation matters. Represented Lockheed in two Navy carrier aircraft accidents and in two civilian Electra (L -188) crashes.
Following a four month trial, Mr. Long obtained a $42 million jury verdict in Los Angeles Superior Court on behalf of Continental Airlines, Inc. in a products liability and fraud suit brought against McDonnell Douglas Corporation as a result of the destruction of a DC-10 aircraft on takeoff at LAX.
Represented Honeywell Inc. in a three-month patent jury trial before the United States District Court for the Central District of California -- the largest patent case in United States history. The technology involved thin film physics, optics and materials science. A judgment for Honeywell was entered by the trial court and, after Federal Circuit and Supreme Court review, was affirmed after eleven years of litigation.
After a seven-month trial, Mr. Long achieved a defense verdict in favor of the State Compensation Insurance Fund in one of the largest class actions ever tried in California. A class consisting of more than 160,000 former policyholders accused the State Fund of fraud, breach of contract and violation of California's Unfair Competition Law, Business & Professions Code 17200 et seq. The plaintiffs sought $2.2 billion.
Obtained a defense judgment for a Fortune 100 company in a breach of contract and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act case in San Diego Superior Court.
Obtained a judgment in favor of United Technologies in a UCC Article 2 case in Orange County Superior Court.
Obtained a defense jury verdict in a $25,000,000 California Securities Act case against officers and directors of a public company.
Obtained a defense judgment on behalf of Continental Tire Company in a fraud and breach of fiduciary duty case brought by Kelly Springfield Tire Co. in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Secured a $10 million AAA award for Western Filter Corporation against Eaton Corporation for breach of contract.
Achieved a jury verdict on behalf of one of the state's largest commercial printers in a case against another commercial printer, its president and one of its sales people. Mr. Long's client was awarded damages for breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, misappropriation of trade secrets and unfair competition. A jury also found in favor of Mr. Long's client on cross-complaints for slander, libel and interference with prospective business advantage. The case was tried in the Orange County Superior Court.
Obtained a favorable result for ARCO in a products liability trial in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Obtained a jury verdict for compensatory and punitive damages in favor of Sundstrand in a fraud and breach of lease case tried in Orange County Superior Court.
Obtained a defense verdict in favor of MCI in a jury trial in Los Angeles Superior Court that involved allegations of fraud and breach of contract.
Obtained a defense verdict in favor of a national law firm in Los Angeles Superior Court in a case which involved labor advice given to the Las Vegas Sands Expo and Convention Center.
Secured a multimillion dollar jury verdict in favor of Rancho Shock Absorbers in a trade libel and false advertising case in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Obtained a multi-million dollar settlement in favor of Security Pacific National Bank in a warehouse line dispute - after the trial judge recommended during trial that the other side settle.
Achieved a defense verdict for Sundstrand in an age discrimination and wrongful termination case in Orange County Superior Court.
Represented a number of financial institutions in lender liability and other types of litigation, including Bank of America, First Interstate Bank, CIT, and Bank of California.
Obtained judgment for client in a complex real estate easement case tried to the court in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Obtained TRO and preliminary injunction and favorable settlement on behalf of a national law firm in breach of fiduciary duty and theft of trade secrets case against another national firm.
Represented real estate developer in fraud and breach of contract case involving 100,000 acre ranch located in Central California.
Successfully represented the Literary Estate of Ian Fleming in the MGM-Sony litigation concerning the rights to the James Bond cinematic character.
Successfully represented Southwestern Portland Cement Company in arbitration involving the design and construction of a cement kiln.
Achieved the dismissal of state and federal claims against a nationally known law firm in malpractice action based on a series of biotech patent prosecutions.
Represented Sunstrand Corporation in a patent and trade secret case brought by Litton that involved ring laser gyroscope technology.
Obtained two arbitration awards, for $15 million and $25 million, in a series of proceedings involving a fraudulent breach of insurance investment contracts.
Obtained an arbitration award determining ownership of an $80 million real estate development.
