Matthew Esserman is a patent agent in the Intellectual Property Practice Group in the firm's Del Mar office.

Areas of Practice

Matthew manages and develops global patent portfolios for multinational corporations and small entities. He has experience in client counseling and strategy development, full preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications, patentability searches, and assisting with infringement and validity opinions.

Matthew also has experience with patent procurement pertaining to the fields of electrical, mechanical, medical devices, medical imaging, automotive, electric vehicles, autonomous vehicle control, aviation, semiconductors, computer hardware, computer software, networking, telecommunications, medical imaging, biomechanical, prosthetics, exoskeletons/exosuits and assistive technologies, optical displays, heads-up displays, pico/nano projectors, optical waveguide screens, imaging optics, LED light source engines, sensors, emitters, light-pipe array biochip synthesizers, firearms, energy, musical instruments, sports equipment, maglev transportation, and superconductor fields.

Prior to joining Sheppard Mullin, he served as a director of intellectual property for a global technology firm, and as a patent examiner for the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, where he analyzed hundreds of patent applications to determine the utility, novelty, and patentability of inventions in the areas of high definition television, flat panel displays, CRTs, visual displays, illumination, and discharge devices.

Matthew earned his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering at Rutgers University, College of Engineering.
