All Bets Are On! Gambling, Sports, and Video Games in the 21st Century

American Bar Association Webinar
09.12.2018

When:
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM ET

About:

James Gatto will be a panelist at this event.

Join our panel of experts as they review the recent Supreme Court decision in Murphy v. NCAA, and contemplate the legal and business ramifications of the opinion on the entertainment and sports industries.

Panelists will also address the issue of loot boxes in video games—what are these value-added in-game features, and could they be considered "gambling" under state and federal laws in the U.S., and existing legal regimes in the European Union? Finally, faculty will discuss how the daily fantasy sports business may evolve as a result of changes in the law.

Specifically, panelists will:

  • Analyze extant gambling laws and regulations and predict how they may be applied to new entertainment and sports business models in the online marketplace
  • Illustrate how difficult it may be to apply laws enacted in the 20th century under different societal circumstances, to 21st century media and technology
  • Explain how legal authorities in various jurisdictions treat similar fact patterns differently because of heterogeneous cultural norms.
