Black women often are misidentified as holding a position other than the attorney role, whether it be the secretary, paralegal, court reporter or even stenographer. From “you are not what I expected” to “you do not look like what I imagined,” Black women often have to identify themselves as the attorney – a necessity that is not as common for white men who “look the part.”
In fact, MCCA’s Bias Interrupters research revealed that 57.52% of women of color reported that they were mistaken for administrative staff, court personnel or custodial staff compared to 7.07% of white men – the largest differences in the report.
The panel will discuss the all-too-common and prevalent issues specific to Black women, from recruitment, retention, and advancement to partnership or general counsel, and how law firms and corporations can work to help Black women advance by #BreakingBarriersToEntry.
