International Trade Expert Joins Sheppard Mullin Los Angeles

Partner Curt Dombek Expands Firm's International Arbitration Capabilities & Asia Practice
01.04.2010

Curtis M. Dombek has joined the Los Angeles/Downtown office of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton as a partner in the firm's Government Contracts and Regulated Industries practice group.  An international trade specialist, Dombek most recently practiced at Bryan Cave in Los Angeles.

"Curt brings an exceptional background in international trade compliance and international arbitration, that includes high profile cases and expertise in encryption.  His knowledge and expertise will significantly enhance and expand our trade capabilities, especially in the Far East where we've been growing our China practice," said Guy Halgren, chairman of the firm.

"I look forward to growing the firm's international trade practice, in Los Angeles and overseas," Dombek said.  "Sheppard Mullin is a first rate firm dedicated to growing its Shanghai office and global practice, and I'm excited to be part of that.  The firm's deep expertise in areas as diverse as government contracts, white collar defense, IP, antitrust and fashion & apparel provide natural synergies with my regulatory practice.  I was attracted to both the firm's strong platform and its entrepreneurial spirit."

Dombek advises clients on the full range of international regulatory issues, including civilian and military export controls, trade sanctions and blocking orders, customs matters, CFIUS reviews, the antiboycott regulations and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.  He handles export control compliance and other international matters for multinationals in the telecommunications, computer hardware and software, aerospace and defense, pharmaceutical, electronics, energy, apparel and retail industries.  Dombek has designed international compliance programs and advised on complex questions of international compliance for companies with global operations.  He also performs regulatory due diligence in cross-border M&A transactions.

Assisting companies in complying with the detailed export controls on encryption, telecommunications and aerospace technology is a significant part of his practice, as is the regulatory compliance relevant to outsourcing of design and production activities to countries such as India and China.  Dombek has represented clients in many global internal investigations and high-profile international trade cases.  He has represented domestic and foreign clients in ICC, LCIA, and ad hoc arbitrations in Europe and Asia and has conducted many depositions and other investigative and discovery proceedings overseas.

Dombek received a J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1983 and an undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, with highest honors, from Harvard College in 1980.

Sheppard Mullin has more than 200 attorneys based in its Los Angeles offices.  The firm's Government Contracts and Regulated Industries practice group includes 40 attorneys firmwide.
