Healthcare Regulatory Expert Latest Addition to Growing Office
06.25.2015

Steven J. Chananie has joined Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP’s New York office as a partner in the firm’s Healthcare practice and Corporate practice group.  Chananie joins from Garfunkel Wild, where he was head of the firm’s Compliance and Defense practice group.

"We are thrilled to welcome Steve, who brings healthcare regulatory expertise to our New York office.  In addition to the growth of our Healthcare regulatory and compliance practice, he expands and deepens our ability to serve as special healthcare counsel for private equity funds, commercial and investment banks and strategic investors targeting the healthcare industry," said Guy N. Halgren, chairman of Sheppard Mullin.

Eric A. Klein, Sheppard Mullin's Healthcare practice chair, adds that "Steve joins Sheppard Mullin as part of our ongoing strategic goal to expand our healthcare industry capabilities and to assist clients as they meet the challenges of healthcare reform.  He is an accomplished attorney who works with leading New York hospital systems, and his practice dovetails well with our Healthcare group and the firm.  Steve brings strong health system regulatory capabilities to our East Coast healthcare practice, and he will work with Sheppard Mullin’s national healthcare team in many of the innovative population health management and value-based reimbursement systems projects we are undertaking today.”

"I am thrilled to join Sheppard Mullin,” Chananie commented.  "I have been very impressed by the firm's strategic vision, well-managed growth, and accomplishments in the health industry. Sheppard Mullin provides me with a very strong platform and a deep bench of very experienced attorneys in diverse practice specialties, all of which is essential to enable me to provide the best possible service to my clients.  The firm has a dynamic group of healthcare attorneys with extensive experience implementing the innovative programs and transactions that are reshaping the nation’s healthcare system and that are an increasing focus on the East Coast."

In his practice over the past 19 years, Chananie has represented numerous healthcare providers, advising them on regulatory and fraud and abuse issues in the structuring of complex healthcare transactions and arrangements; guiding them in the resolution of potential compliance problems; and assisting them in implementing or modifying their compliance programs.

Chananie has also defended numerous clients against civil government actions and investigations, including in False Claims Act cases, threatened Anti-Kickback prosecutions, and various state and federal audits.  He brings his knowledge of government enforcement efforts -- along with his technical legal expertise and his practical understanding of how healthcare providers operate in the real world -- to his guidance on regulatory and compliance matters.  His clients include academic medical centers, hospital systems, faculty practice plans, laboratories (both independent and hospital-based), physician practices, ambulatory surgery centers, nursing homes, and home health agencies.

Prior to entering private practice, Chananie was Chief of Appeals at the Queens County District Attorney’s Office (1993 - 1996), Counsel to Field Operations and chief appellate counsel at the New York State Organized Crime Task Force (1987 - 1993), and an Assistant District Attorney at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office (1983 - 1987).

Chananie received a J.D., summa cum laude, from Pace Law School in 1983 and a B.A. from Princeton University in 1979.

Sheppard Mullin has 60 attorneys based in its New York office. The firm's Healthcare practice includes 115 attorneys firmwide.

In March, Sheppard Mullin added Corporate partner Andy Felner in New York.  Felner joined Sheppard Mullin from FDX Capital LLC/FDX Offshore LLC.
