Fourth Sheppard Mullin Attorney Inducted Into American College of Bankruptcy Lawyers
Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton is proud to announce that Mike Ahrens, partner in the Finance and Bankruptcy Practice Group in the firm's San Francisco office, was inducted into the American College of Bankruptcy Lawyers at the 2003 Induction Ceremony held in the Great Hall of the U.S. Supreme Court on March 28, 2003.
The American College of Bankruptcy Lawyers is an honorary professional and educational association with only about 500 members nationwide. Members, including judges, government officials, law professors, attorneys, and accountants, are selected by a Board of Regents from among recommendations made by the Circuit Admissions Council in each federal judicial circuit. Criteria for selection include: highest professional qualifications and ethical standards; highest level of character, integrity, professional expertise and leadership; contributions to the improvement of the bankruptcy and insolvency processes; and sustained evidence of scholarship, teaching, lecturing and distinguished published writings on bankruptcy or insolvency practice.

Ahrens, also elected one of the Best Lawyers in America©, represents clients nationwide in all types of insolvency proceedings, representing Chapter 11 debtors, creditors committees, trustees and secured debtors. Additionally, Ahrens has represented clients in the purchase and sale of assets of troubled companies, and has substantial experience with loan workout problems of troubled companies, representing both creditors and borrowers.
In addition to being a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of California, and the Bar Association of San Francisco, Ahrens serves as Resolution Advocate (1994-present) appointed by United States Bankruptcy Court, Northern District of California, under the Bankruptcy Dispute Resolution Program; and Director of the Bay Area Bankruptcy Forum (1997-present). He has served as a member of the Bankruptcy Advisory Committee; United States District Court, Northern District of California. Ahrens represents major parties in the following Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases: Pacific Gas & Electric, and Kenetech Wind Power; Western Asbestos; Dillingham Construction, Natural Wonders, ATG Telecom, iSyndicate, Media Vision, and Federal Mogul, Finova, Trailways and Knudsen.
Sheppard Mullin is fortunate to have three other attorneys previously inducted into the American College of Bankruptcy Lawyers, including Joel Ohlgren, Prentice O'Leary and Merrill Francis. Several of the firm's attorneys are members of other American Colleges. Thomas Sheppard, Joan Story, Bob Thompson and Bob Williams have been inducted into the American College of Real Estate Lawyers. John Berchild is a member of the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers. Andrew Guilford, former president of the California State Bar, is a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Joseph Gorman and Randy Godshall are members of the American College of Trusts & Estates Counsel, and Kirk Wallace is a member of the American College of Mortgage Lawyers. Although of diverse legal disciplines, the induction processes themselves are very similar, including by invitation only, based on outstanding professional reputation and demonstrated ability within practice, as well as making substantial contributions to the area of law.
