Gary D. Mangels, Ph.D is special counsel in the Intellectual Property Practice Group in the firm's Washington, D.C. office.

Areas of Practice

Gary has 16 years of experience in intellectual property law following 26 years practicing as a chemist in several disciplines.  He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Sheppard Mullin having served both in private practice and in-house roles.

He primarily focuses on patent prosecution, management and counseling. He also has experience in patent litigation, opinions, inter partes and post-grant reviews, patent reissue and reexamination matters, patent interferences and intellectual property licensing and transactional matters.  His technical expertise includes pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, animal health products and polymers. 

Prior to entering the legal profession, Gary was a chemist for 26 years with American Cyanamid, which became part of the agricultural chemicals group of Pfizer, Inc. and, later, part of BASF Corporation.  Gary started as an organic chemist, then worked studying the metabolism of agricultural chemicals in plants and animals and their behavior in the environment.  He later started a research group focused on studying the environmental fate of agricultural chemicals and animal health products.  Gary later became an Associate Research Fellow and was responsible for environmental issues related to agricultural chemicals and animal health products.

Gary earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, his M.A. and his Ph.D. in Environmental Science from Rutgers University, and his J.D. from Rutgers University Camden School of Law.
