Pride Month is celebrated in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising. On June 28, 1969 police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village, but bar patrons fought back. The rebellion was largely led by transgender women of color and became a catalyst for an emerging gay rights movement across the United States as organizations such as the Gay Liberation Front and the Gay Activists Alliance were formed. To commemorate the one-year anniversary of the rebellion, Brenda Howard, a bisexual activist, organized the first Pride march and became known as the “Mother of Pride.”

Sheppard Mullin is a global law firm with a strong tradition of supporting the LGBTQ+ community through diversity and inclusion, legal pro bono, and charitable giving. The mission of Sheppard Mullin’s LGBTQ+ affinity group, Out at Sheppard, is to increase the visibility of and support for LGBTQ+ attorneys and professionals within the firm and to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals and their loved ones. Sheppard Mullin serves as pro bono counsel for LA Pride and San Francisco Pride, and is national pro bono counsel for GLAAD. We also support a range of LGBTQ+ legal organizations. We aim to positively impact not only our own and our clients’ workplaces but also the larger communities in which we practice.
