James McGinnis Joins Sheppard Mullin as Partner

03.21.2002

Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP announced today that James L. McGinnis has joined the firm as a lateral partner. Mr. McGinnis is a member of the Antitrust and Trade Regulation and the Business Crimes practice groups in the firm’s San Francisco office.

"Jim is an excellent addition to our Antitrust and Trade Regulation Practice Group," said Gary Halling, who chairs the practice group and is a partner in the firm's San Francisco office. "Jim is an outstanding lawyer and adds tremendous depth and breadth to our class action and white collar criminal defense practices in the Bay Area."

McGinnis comes to Sheppard Mullin after more than 13 years with Morgenstein & Jubelirer, including the last 10 as a partner in that firm. He has practiced for 23 years both in private practice and with the Justice Department as an Assistant United States Attorney. He has first-chaired more than 25 jury trials to verdict, argued numerous appeals and conducted many more court trials and arbitrations.

"I am delighted to join such a talented group of lawyers," McGinnis said. "My antitrust and unfair business practices experience fits very well with a firm already deep in those areas and I look forward to working with Sheppard Mullin's fine statewide white collar defense practice."

McGinnis had been with Morgenstein & Jubelirer since 1988 and had become a partner in January 1992. His practice has included complex antitrust and securities litigation, class actions involving unfair business practices, and federal white collar criminal defense, along with SEC and other regulatory enforcement actions. McGinnis is also experienced in administrative enforcement proceedings, advising clients through internal investigations and evaluating corporate compliance programs.

McGinnis began his legal career as a litigator with Morgan, Lewis & Bockius in Philadelphia in 1979, later moving to San Francisco to join Jackson, Tufts, Cole & Black. Over the next four years at Jackson Tufts, he handled general civil litigation with an emphasis on antitrust, securities and other complex commercial cases.

McGinnis joined the United States Justice Department's Criminal Division, Eastern and Central Districts of California, as an Assistant United States Attorney in 1984. His responsibilities at the Justice Department included the supervision of major international narcotics investigations and prosecutions.

A graduate of Yale University, McGinnis earned his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley's Boalt Hall. He is a member of the San Francisco Bar Association and the American Bar Association's sections on Litigation and Antitrust. Sheppard Mullin has more than 330 attorneys among its seven offices in San Francisco, Santa Barbara, West Los Angeles, Los Angeles, Orange County, Del Mar Heights and San Diego. The full-service firm provides counsel in Corporate, Trial Practice, Finance, Bankruptcy, Labor and Employment, Intellectual Property, Real Estate, Land Use, Environmental, Construction, Tax, Employee Benefits, Trusts & Estates, Antitrust & Trade Regulation, Government Contracts, and Business Crimes. The firm is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2002.
