Joe Gorman Honored by L.A. County Bar

The Trusts and Estates Law Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association has announced it will present its Arthur K. Marshall Award to Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton partner Joe Gorman.

"I'm honored to receive this award," Gorman said. "I knew Art Marshall as a respected colleague both on and off the bench."

The Arthur K. Marshall Award is conferred upon individuals who are recognized as having made outstanding contributions to estate planning and probate law. The award is not presented every year but is given only when a nominated candidate is deemed especially worthy. Candidates are nominated by members of the Trusts and Estates Section of the County Bar and merits are discussed by section committees, who ultimately decide whether the honor will be given in a particular year.

Gorman is a partner in Sheppard Mullin's Tax and Estate Planning practice group in the firm's Los Angeles office. His practice involves all aspects of estate planning and the administration of trusts and estates. His experience includes the creation and administration of charitable trusts and foundations, life insurance irrevocable trusts, family limited partnerships and limited liability corporations. In addition, he handles many high profile litigation matters involving trusts and estates.

Gorman has served as Chair of the Death Tax Committees of the California State Bar's and Los Angeles County Bar Association’s Tax Sections. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trusts & Estates Counsel and served for six years as a Regent of that College.

Gorman will receive his award at the Trusts and Estates Section's June luncheon meeting, beginning at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, June 25, at the Omni Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. For information about this event, please call (213) 896-6560.

The Marshall award was established during Gorman's tenure as Chair of the Trusts and Estates Section in 1982. The first Marshall award honoree was Arthur K. Marshall himself. Marshall was a Los Angeles Superior Court judge for more than 25 years and was heralded for his probate acumen. Marshall, who passed away in 1999, was appointed as Los Angeles Municipal Court judge by Governor Edmund G. Brown in January 1962. In July 1963, Brown elevated Marshall to the Superior Court, where he served as Supervising Judge of the Probate Department. He was Acting Assistant Professor of Property and Trust Law at UCLA for six years and lectured on Taxation and Probate procedures at USC Law Center for many years. Marshall authored the California Probate Handbook and California State and Local Taxation.

This award is the fifth recent honor recognizing Sheppard Mullin and the firm's lawyers for outstanding legal service. In April, the San Diego County Bar Association honored Sheppard Mullin as Law Firm of the Year. Andrew Guilford, a partner in Sheppard Mullin's Orange County office and former President of the State Bar of California, received the 2002 Jurisprudence Award from the Orange County/Long Beach chapter of the Anti-Defamation League. San Francisco partner Joseph Petrillo was honored in April by the Treasure Island Homeless Development Initiative and San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown at TIHDI's annual awards dinner. In May, the Antitrust & Unfair Competition Law Section of the State Bar of California announced that Don T. Hibner, Jr., Of Counsel with Sheppard Mullin, will receive the Section's 2002 Antitrust Lawyer of the Year Award.

Sheppard Mullin has more than 330 attorneys among its seven offices in Los Angeles, West Los Angeles, Orange County, Del Mar Heights, San Diego, San Francisco and Santa Barbara.
