Federal and state law prohibit employers from discriminating against and harassing employees based on their race, color, ethnic origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, pregnancy, marital status, veteran status, medical condition (e.g. cancer), and perceived or actual mental or physical disabilities. Employers are also prohibited from unlawfully retaliating against employees. Employers must comply with the myriad and often inconsistent laws. Federal and state agencies, as well as individual employees, may pursue claims against employers, with significant financial exposure.
